Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Show a systematic knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of a range of current topics in pharmacology.
• Show a comprehensive understanding of techniques relevant to pharmacology and drug discovery.
• Critically evaluate the data and methodology of current published research in pharmacology.
• Develop an understanding of the use of animals in pharmacology and drug development, including ethical considerations.
• Develop an understanding of enterprise and drug development in the context of realising wider societal benefits.

There will be ten summative work packages, covering Structure and function of drug/ target interactions Biotechnology in pharmacology and drug discovery Drug development In vivo Pharmacology Neuropharmacology Current cancer treatments Pharmacology and the immune system Medical microbiology and antibiotic resistance

The module will consist of ten work packages, each led by a research scientist. Within each work package the students will be provided with detailed information about an area of research and the techniques involved in an interactive seminar format, as well as relevant literature. Where possible the students will be given the opportunity to observe experimentation. In a workshop format, students will be guided through the relevant processes of data analysis. Each work package will be followed by an assessment suitable to the material covered within the workshop. The assessments will task the students to formulate hypotheses, undertake appropriate analysis of sample data and to prepare a report putting the information into context. They will build on and use aspects of the workshop to develop skills required to extract and critically evaluate data, and to discuss the approaches and findings with advanced precision. Primary papers, reviews and wider policy documents will be used to develop advanced understanding. There will be one assessment for each work package (100% of module mark), each workshop is equally weighted. The course will thus develop the student’s ability to understand pharmacology and drug discovery methodologies and synthesise material at an advanced level, consistent with a student studying at level 7. It will further develop an awareness for enterprise and commercialisation.
