Bourdieu’s Reproduction – 50 Years After

It became a seminal text in the radical ‘New Sociology of Education’, which was announced with the collection Knowledge and Control (1972), to which Bourdieu also contributed two articles.

With a new accent on language, the construction of Classroom Knowledge and the role that Cultural Capital played in reproducing class hierarches, a new focus for educational research opened up. Consequent methodological innovations included ethnography, reflexivity, action research, and case study, etc. This research seminar examines and reassesses Reproduction and its main message 50 year later. It addresses its influence and the subsequent backlash against the research approaches it fostered. It finally returns to Bourdieu’s early work with ethnographies in France and North Africa in order to situate Reproduction in his oeuvre, to argue that key aspects of it were misinterpreted, and its potential left unrealised.

• Grenfell, M (2023) Bourdieu’s Metanoia: Seeing the Social Work Anew.
