Miss Jiayi Fang is a Visiting Postgraduate research student for聽Engineering and Physical Sciences at the 黑料社.

I am visiting Southampton because of the expertise in coastal studies.

I am visiting the 黑料社 from Beijing Normal University (BNU) between January 2016 and July 2017. I completed undergraduate study (2009-2013) in Marine Science (Physical oceanography) from Ocean University of China. Most of courses I have taken related to oceanography, meteorology, engineering, mathematics and physics. In Beijing, I am a PhD student (2013-2018) where I am studying Natural Disaster in the Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management in BNU. After learning disasters and risk, my research interests focus on natural disasters and risk in coastal areas.

I participated the Young Scientist Summer Program 2015 hosted by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), working as Research Assistant in the Risk, Policy and Vulnerability (RPV) group. My research topic there was 鈥淐oastal disasters in China: impacts and resilience鈥.

Research interests

My PhD topic is risk assessment and scenario analysis of coastal flood in China under climate change. In China, rapid urbanization combined with fast growth of coastal economy, dense population and great asset accumulation in coastal zones make these areas more sensitive to natural disasters and climate change.

I have been working on the area of coastal disasters including green tides, storm surge, and social vulnerability in China鈥檚 coastal areas.

I also work with Dr. Jochen Hinkel and Dr. Daniel Lincke in Global Climate Forum in Germany as I am using the Dynamic Interactive Vulnerability Assessment (DIVA) model to assess the impacts of sea-level rise and coastal flooding in China for my PhD.

PhD supervision: Prof. Robert Nicholls, Dr. Sally Brown
