The cavitation erosion rig is a custom built rig using an ultrasonic horn to induce cavitation bubble creation, the bubbles then collapse on the surface, producing a supersonic micro-jet that erodes the surface underneath the horn.
The cavitation erosion rig is a custom built rig using an ultrasonic horn to induce cavitation bubble creation, the bubbles then collapse on the surface, producing a supersonic micro-jet that erodes the surface underneath the horn.Ìý This is referred to ‘indirect’ mode of cavitation.Ìý The rig complies with ASTM G32, operating at 20 MHz at a displacement of 50 µm.Ìý Tests can be conducted in distilled water for pure erosion and salt water for erosion-corrosion experiments.
The rig has been used for study of propeller materials for naval and commercial shipping applications, as well as erosion-resistance of candidate solutions for leading edge turbine blade protection.
