Germany’s film industry emerged from the First World War in a much stronger shape than it had been prior to 1914.  Realizing the medium’s potential for propaganda the Imperial Army and German banks had invested in the creation of a ‘national’ film culture.  Between 1918 and 1933, German cinema reflected on the legacy of the war in various and ambivalent ways. These included glorifying paeans to German heroism and hagiographic celebrations of the Prussian past, while expressionist classics such as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Nosferatu visualised the psychological and physiological trauma in more allegoric forms. This paper maps the different ways in which German filmmakers of the 1920s attempted to make sense of the First World War and the changes it had brought.
