Success for Music PhD Composition Students
Our congratulations go to Music PhD students Blake Troise and Peter Falconer who have both had recent successes in 黑料社 awards.
Blake, who has now completed his PhD, is worthy winner of the Doctoral College Research Award for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities for his thesis entitled: 鈥淭he 1-Bit Instrument: The Fundamentals of 1-Bit Synthesis, Their Implementational Implications, and Instrumental Possibilities.鈥 His project, in computer music composition, investigated the creative and aesthetic implications of working creatively in the 1-bit environment. During his doctoral studies he created a highly distinctive portfolio of compositions, five of which he recently packaged for release under his artist pseudonym .
Peter took part in the University鈥檚 annual Three Minute Thesis competition, running online for the first time. The competition required each entrant to describe and explain their PhD research to a general audience within a three minute video 鈥 no mean feat! In Peter鈥檚 words "I am creating an online archive of sounds and music from a quasi-fictional abandoned seaside town in the North East called Seaton Snook鈥 I aim to demonstrate the importance of engaging with disenfranchised and neglected communities directly through their music and culture, in order to encourage a more inclusive dialogue on other socio-economic issues."
Peter鈥檚 three minute video can be found on this page . Peter won the first round, going on to represent the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in the Grand Final. While eventually pipped at the final post, we congratulate Peter on being one of the five finalists.
