������ achieves remarkable rise in QS World University Rankings 2022

The ������’s growing reputation around the world has led to the institution’s remarkable rise of 13 places in the QS World University Rankings 2022, published today.

Southampton is now ranked 77th amongst the 1,300 universities ranked overall by QS – a climb of 25 places since 2018 and its highest ranking by QS since the University achieved 73rd overall in 2012.

Professor Mark E. Smith, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, praised colleagues for their excellent contributions in making this achievement possible. He also highlighted the increased citation rates for Southampton’s published world-class research and the improved recognition of the University by employers as key factors in this year’s ranking success.

“There are lots of excellent universities across the world and being recognised in the top 100 is something that we, at Southampton, celebrate as formal recognition of the dedication shown by our hard-working and high-quality staff and students and our impact-led and globally-relevant research, all of which is creating a positive impact across the globe,” The Vice-Chancellor reflected. “To have improved our position by more than 10 places from already being within the top 100 is a really strong performance and a true indicator of our status as a world-leading university as seen by our peers and those in industry and other sectors with whom we collaborate and who continue to recruit our high-quality graduates in great numbers.

“Two key elements of our success to highlight are the citation profile which has strengthened greatly – testament to the real international quality of research and other academic activities which our colleagues across the University are carrying out - and the real improvement in the international reputation amongst employers, enhancing the prospects for our students. A heartfelt thank you to all of my colleagues across the University for all of their hard work that has got us to this recognition.”

To rank the 1,300 institutions in this year’s , data was analysed and performance indicators reviewed with a focus on excellence in research and teaching, as well as the international profile of students and staff and each university’s global reputation amongst fellow academics and employers.

This year Southampton scored particularly well for its reputation amongst employers, moving up 31 places in this category, whilst also increasing its research citations per faculty, leading the University to rise 41 places. In addition, Southampton improved 21 places for the proportion of students who are international, a strong reflection of the University’s continued popularity amongst students from around the world.
