Current research
The Quaternary is a period of time in which extraordinary changes took place, including large scale climate change, and associated ecosystem responses. My research interests are based around understanding such changes, over timescales from millennia to historical, and typically involve reconstructing environmental change from sedimentary deposits (lake or peat sediments). I use many different tools, from fossils to geochemistry and molecular approaches, and have co-authored the definitive guide to using (non-biting midges) for environmental reconstruction. I have worked on sediment sequences from every continent bar Antarctica, and tackled major research projects working on reconstructing past climate change, lake pollution and health, human-climate inter-relationships, and advanced the understanding of ecosystem tipping points. Beyond these palaeoenvironmental research interersts, I am increasingly focused on working across disciplines to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.

Research groups
Any research groups you belong to will automatically appear on your profile. Speak to your line manager if these are incorrect. Please do not raise a ticket in Ask HR.
Research interests
Add up to 5 research interests. The first 3 will appear in your staff profile next to your name. The full list will appear on your research page. Keep these brief and focus on the keywords people may use when searching for your work. Use a different line for each one.
In , select 鈥楨dit profile鈥. Under the heading 'Curriculum and research description', select 'Add profile information'. In the dropdown menu, select 'Research interests: use separate lines'.

Update this in . Select 鈥楨dit profile鈥 and then 鈥楥urriculum and research description - Current research鈥.
Describe your current research in 100 to 200 words. Write in the third person. Include broad key terms to help people discover your work, for example, 鈥渟ustainability鈥 or 鈥渇ashion textiles鈥.
Research projects
Research Council funded projects will automatically appear here. The active project name is taken from the finance system.

Public outputs that list you as an author will appear here, once they鈥檙e validated by the ePrints Team. If you鈥檙e missing any outputs that you鈥檝e added to Pure, they may be waiting for validation.
Supervision
Contact your Faculty Operating Service team to update PhD students you supervise and any you鈥檝e previously supervised. Making this information available will help potential PhD applicants to find you.
Teaching
I very much enjoy working with our students to help them be the best that they can. I mainly teach across the physical geography and environmental sciences degrees, teaching in the classroom, laboratory and field.
You can update your teaching description in . Select 鈥楨dit profile鈥. Under the heading and then 鈥楥urriculum and research description鈥 , select 鈥楢dd profile information鈥. Biography
Professor Peter Langdon has >20 years of working with lake sediments and ecosystems across the world. Over the last 15+ years he has increasingly focused on freshwater ecosystem responses and resilience to multidimensional drivers, and linking palaeolimnology with contemporary limnology. He has, with colleagues, developed a series of novel metrics based on system structures and networks by which to measure freshwater system resilience, over time, across spatially variable pollution and related drivers, and in the face of climate change. He uses a range of techniques to reconstruct environmental-human interactions, from microfossils, to stable isotopes, and molecular approaches (e.g. sedimentary DNA). He has published >100 papers in international journals and worked on a wide variety of grants from both national and international funding agencies.
Within the 黑料社, he has made a number of significant contributions to the reputation and strategic aims of the University by successfully delivering a number of significant roles. These have included Director of Admissions (2006-2012), Director of Programmes (2013-2016), Impact Champion (2016-2017) and Head of School (2017-2021). Most recently he has Chaired the University fieldwork group, which has oversight on field activities across the institution.
