Current research
My latest book is Republic: Britain's Revolutionary Decade, 1649-1660 (Faber and Faber, 2024). It was picked as one of the 'Best History Books of 2024' by The Times, Telegraph, Unseen Histories and History Today. Early research for the book was supported by a Leverhulme Research Fellowship.
I am currently a co-investigator on a major AHRC research project, 鈥楾he Visible Crown: Elizabeth II and the Caribbean, 1952-present鈥 (visiblecrown.com), working with colleagues at City, UCL and the University of the West Indies. This timely project scrutinises the political and cultural significance of the Queen in the eight Caribbean countries where she was, until her death, head of state. Charles III succeeded his mother as head of state in each country.

Biography
I am Professor in Early Modern Literature and History, and a member of Southampton's Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture.
I joined Southampton as a lecturer in 2006, after completing my BA in English and French at Balliol College, Oxford and my MA and PhD at Birkbeck College, London. Before becoming a full-time academic, I used to work in trade publishing, at Weidenfeld & Nicolson and Atlantic Books, London.
I convene and teach the undergraduate modules Queens, Devils and Players in Early Modern England, Radical England: Literature and Crisis in the Seventeenth Century, The Invention of English, and Shakespeare: Then and Now. I also teach the MA modules Approaches to Shakespeare and The Publishing World.
I have supervised PhD projects on early modern European queens, Elizabeth I, medieval and early modern drama, Shakespeare, and William Davenant. I am currently supervising projects on John Evelyn, Shakespeare, and early modern spectacle. I welcome enquiries for projects on any aspect of late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century British literature, politics and culture, and particularly on the British republic and the Restoration.
