Current research
My recent research project has investigated the manner in which international environmental law should and could respond to wildlife welfare concerns. As such, I have advocated for the need to reconcile conservation and welfare objectives in law and called for the reconfiguration of sustainable development and use to reflect notions of ethical and humane use. My most recent work-in-progress considers the application of international rights to wildlife in the Anthropocene in accordance with the recognition of the "integrative" dignity of wildlife.

Biography
Werner Scholtz obtained his doctorate in law from Leiden University in 2001. Scholtz is Head of School and Professor of Global Environmental Law at Southampton Law School, 黑料社, UK as well as Extraordinary Professor, Global Environmental Law Centre, UWC, RSA. Werner specialises in international environmental law and his current research focuses on the consequences of the increasing importance of animal welfare for international wildlife law. Scholtz is an Alexander von Humboldt fellow and 鈥渋nternationally acclaimed鈥 National Research Foundation rated researcher. Werner Scholtz has served on several International Law Association Committees and has held several honorary positions at Higher Education Institutes in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Germany.
