About
Dr Felix Langfeldt is Associate Professor and Doctoral Programme Director within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, which is part of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the 黑料社. One of the major focal points of Felix's research is developing new so-called acoustic metamaterials for making transport systems more comfortable, living spaces quieter, and, in general, reducing the problem of low-frequency noise in our environment.

- Analytical Modelling of Multi-layered Partitions
Current research
My current research activities revolve around the development, optimization, and modelling of novel structures that control sound. In particular, my research focuses on controlling noise in challenging acoustic environments, for example low-frequency tonal noise or when constraints in terms of the weight and bulk size of acoustic treatments are present. This has strong applications in aerospace, which has been the background for most of my research in the past, but also in many other areas where tonal noise is present, e.g. cars and trains, home appliances, centrifugal compressors, heat pumps, or ventilation systems.

Research groups
Any research groups you belong to will automatically appear on your profile. Speak to your line manager if these are incorrect. Please do not raise a ticket in Ask HR.
Research interests
Add up to 5 research interests. The first 3 will appear in your staff profile next to your name. The full list will appear on your research page. Keep these brief and focus on the keywords people may use when searching for your work. Use a different line for each one.
In , select 鈥楨dit profile鈥. Under the heading 'Curriculum and research description', select 'Add profile information'. In the dropdown menu, select 'Research interests: use separate lines'.
Current research
Update this in . Select 鈥楨dit profile鈥 and then 鈥楥urriculum and research description - Current research鈥.
Describe your current research in 100 to 200 words. Write in the third person. Include broad key terms to help people discover your work, for example, 鈥渟ustainability鈥 or 鈥渇ashion textiles鈥.
Research projects
Research Council funded projects will automatically appear here. The active project name is taken from the finance system.

Biography
Felix Langfeldt studied Aeronautical Engineering (MSc in 2012) and gained more than 10 years of research experience in acoustics and vibration control as a researcher at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany. He obtained his PhD in 2018 for his work on "Membrane-type acoustic metamaterials for aircraft noise shields" and throughout his career he collaborated closely with other research institutes as well as industrial partners like Airbus or 3M to develop innovative acoustic treatments (with particular focus on acoustic metamaterials) that can be used in aircraft cabins to reduce low-frequency tonal noise. In September 2021 he joined the Institute of Sound & Vibration Research in Southampton as a Visiting Academic, funded by an independent fellowship from the German Research Council. In March 2022, Felix was appointed Lecturer at the ISVR, Signal Processing, Audio and Hearing Group. Since October 2023, he is also the ISVR's Doctoral Programme Director. Felix was promoted to Associate Professor in August 2024.
