The course brings together key elements of biology, informatics and medicine, allowing students to explore how our genes work, how they change, and how they relate to our health. For Amelia, it is about being part of a wider system that works together to make a clinical diagnosis. 

“With genomics and genetics, you are the detective, collecting all the data and deciphering it and even though you are not at the forefront, you are a crucial step in how we treat people.”

The flexibility of the course allowed Amelia to pick modules that suited her experience and her future aspirations and allowed her to take part in research and put the theory into clinical practice. 

“I’ve been able to develop a broad skill set and collaborate with experts from different fields. A highlight has been the genomic counselling module. It was very interactive, allowing me to engage with ‘patients’ in a mock session, mimicking the real-life setting of a genomic counselling appointment. The University's strong industry connections have also provided valuable networking opportunities, particularly helpful when deciding what my final dissertation project was going to cover.”

Modern research facilities, welcoming social areas and the sense of community helped Amelia’s time at Southampton be well-rounded and fulfilling, both academically and personally.

“I am a member of the Southampton Vixens Cheerleading team. We recently became national champions at the Future Cheer Manchester competition! It was an incredibly rewarding experience. Being part of the team helped develop leadership and teamworking skills and meant I had a good work-life balance.”

Amelia is now looking forward to a PhD and is excited about collaborating with experts worldwide to help advance healthcare.
