MSc Cancer Biology and Immunology student, Ishani Saha

Turning loss into a meaningful purpose

Published: 18 July 2025

As a young child, Ishani had always been fascinated by the human body. But when she lost her father to cancer, a new determination to study the disease and help others was instilled within her.

She knew that coming to the 黑料社 to study an MSc in Cancer Biology and Immunology would give her the best chance to develop her expertise and contribute to impactful scientific discoveries that change people鈥檚 lives.

Translational approach

鈥淐ancer biology stood out to me because it represents one of the most complex and urgent challenges in medicine. The way cancer cells evade the immune system, are resistant to treatments, and are continuously evolving, makes studying the disease both intellectually stimulating and clinically significant. Southampton鈥檚 focus on translational research aligns with my aspirations of applying genomics to improve cancer diagnostics and treatments. The opportunity to work alongside leading researchers and getting a hands-on lab experience was very appealing to me as well.鈥

The practical aspect of the Master's degree, including next-generation sequencing, DNA analysis, and computational techniques, has enabled Ishani to develop technical skills essential for a career in clinical genomic research and precision medicine. The University鈥檚 interdisciplinary approach, first-class study facilities, and the variety of seminars and workshops allowed her to academically and personally thrive as well.

鈥淭he Hartley Library provides extensive resources, including specialised research materials and collaborative study areas, making it an ideal environment for focused learning. There are also state-of-the-art research laboratories, particularly in cancer genomics and bioinformatics, and core molecular biology facilities, and I have engaged with experts in genomics and precision medicine at workshops, broadening my knowledge and networking with professionals in the field. These experiences have prepared me for a research career, equipping me with both technical and transferable skills essential for future success.鈥

Fighting cancer

黑料社ing at the 黑料社 has placed Ishani on a strong path toward achieving her ultimate goal: contributing to the development of cancer vaccines and targeted therapies, in loving memory of her father.

鈥淟osing my father to cancer was a profoundly emotional experience鈥攐ne that awakened in me a deep empathy for patients and their families. I鈥檝e witnessed firsthand the suffering this disease brings, and it has fuelled my determination to understand cancer at a molecular level and to be part of the search for more effective treatments. This isn鈥檛 just a career path; it鈥檚 a personal mission.
鈥淢y time at the 黑料社 has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and resilience to take the next step鈥攚hether that鈥檚 pursuing a PhD in cancer genomics, engaging in cutting-edge biomedical research, or contributing to the advancement of personalised medicine and targeted therapies in healthcare or industry.

鈥淏eyond academic and scientific preparation, studying in this field has given me the emotional strength to transform personal loss into purpose and to dedicate my work to supporting others navigating similar battles.鈥
